Thank you for the king words Josh! Your tireless campaign to have Hillel become a community priority are paying off too. You have sat through a lifetime of meetings in just a few years- and you keep on going! Yashar Koach!

Josh....Good stuff. One angle not addressed though is the admiration and respect often afforded to Jewish students by their teachers and peers. Many times I have been told by people, "I really respect how you are the most Jewish person I know", and yet I don't actually consider myself to be terribly observant. I may be culturally Jewish, but certainly not very religiously, yet it is the willingness to identify myself as a Jewish person in society that is typically positively received and acknowledged.

Andy,

I think we said the same thing: the nominations are really what we should be focusing on. That there is a fixation on getting the most votes is distracting from nominating. The top two on the leaderboard had a combined total of 3000ish votes by Wed morning--after more than a week of campaigning. A day later, those two had 8,000ish combined.

I'm still rooting for the very amazing Rabbi Yonah http://tinyurl.com/Yonah and hoping that my friends keep me in mind now and again. http://tinyurl.com/ln4wel . But I'd really like to see all of us go and nominate one more person today. C'mon...nominate someone. You will make their day!

Hi; someone passed along a link to your posting, and since I've been involved in this program from the get-go, I wanted to drop you a line about your interesting set of suggestions.

First, I'd argue that to see the leaderboard and prize as the end-all and be-all of this campaign isn't what we intended; those are part of it, but really, as it says in the rules, all nominees will get nice certificates at the end of the event, and the nomination also serves as a very public 'thank-you' for people who generally do thankless work to sustain important service initiatives. So I'd like to think that every nominee will appreciate being a nominee. Certainly the assorted e-mails I've gotten from nominees, nominators and voters has been very positive. And only two weeks in, we've had over 100 nominees and 20,000 votes, so I'd like to think that shows that this is, if not the only workable format, at least one format that seems to be holding its own.

As to whether we're right to mix professionals and volunteers, maybe we can go a different way in year two. It's not set in stone. We actually did discuss breaking this up into assorted categories -- topics, types of service etc., but given that this was our first year, we ran the risk of creating segments that didn't get enough activity to be compelling. So we opted to put all of the nominees in one place and let the voters read them all in one big gulp.

Oh, and good luck in the voting!

Josh,

Great entry. The Aurty Museum hosted an exhibition a few years back about the Jewish settlers in California. It was a wonderful exhibit highlighting the early contribution of Jews in the West. We have a lot to learn about those who came before us.

Funny :) Except that during the 5 hours I slept since my last post, one of the families we plan to travel with called: they are thinking about pulling out. Why? 'Cause some rockets fell in the North and Israel may punish Gaza. Hmmm...Seems as if Israelis manage to deal with it every day. I think we can handle 10 days.

I guarantee the following: these friends will call other friends. Their parents will call them. They will all ask the same question. Then they will tell their friends that they are concerned for their safety. Everybody will freak out and raise tension levels. Somebody else will decide that this is not the summer to visit Israel (again) and there we go...FUD weakens Israel.

Look...nobody (at least on our side of the border) wants to bring their family into the line of fire unnecessarily. I get that.

I've been to So-Cal. You have nothing to fear in Israel. This will be a trip your kids will remember forever, and if you take my advice, you'll have a great time too. I commend your desire to look beyond the surface and I am always available to help you see the real, non-touristy Israel. Looking forward to your arrival!

...ah...Jewish diversity. Knowing that many don't keep Shabbat or Kashrut, I'll take 'em at family...even if it is a loose interpretation of family.
